We are ready to officially open our museum and have invited nine fourth grade classes to visit in the next three weeks! Due to unforeseen conflicts in the end-of-the-year schedule, we had to bump up the first visit by an entire week, so our first visitors will be coming next Thursday, May 12th! If you are new to this blog, the archived posts will get you up to speed!
In these past few weeks, some changes were made. We felt the name of the museum was important, and decided to brainstorm ideas again, before committing to the one that would appear on invitations and decorations. The students voted to call it the LEAD DoSEUM, since they felt "DoSeum" best described it! Like our local children's DoSeum here in San Antonio, our three-room museum is designed so that visitors will be engaged in doing something in each area, rather than just looking at displays. They liked "LEAD" because it is an acronym for "learn, explore, and discover" and we are also a "Leader in Me" school.
Kendra and Elizabeth created the logo (see photo) and we had a local office supply store enlarge it to create a beautiful banner which is now up in the entrance hallway and will be the first thing visitors see when they enter. Several parent volunteers helped get the name of each room up on the hallway bulletin boards, and the students decorated them.

Finally, this past week, the students "tested" the scavenger hunt that visitors will be doing in the Seeker Space area. I originally hoped the students could prepare this, but due to the loss of so much prep time, I created it myself. I knew the students would provide feedback and we could make changes. I created several crossword puzzles and copied them on colored paper. The students had so much fun completing them by reading and looking at each other's projects! This was the first time they had a chance to see all of the projects, neatly displayed and looking professional! It was so gratifying to witness their pride and joy in what they had created! As they completed one puzzle, there were additional ones, and they kept going for about forty minutes, which is twice as much time as we can allow for our visitors. They were having so much fun, I didn't stop them until we had to leave to get to lunch!
I thought it would be fun for the students to wear "docent lanyards" so that they could be easily identified when they are working in the DoSeum. I also prepared a Visitor's Guide slide show that the fourth grade teachers will show their classes prior to their visit. And the students and I are working on a feedback form that each class can complete after their visit.
The next post will be my last one! I hope to share photos of the GRAND OPENING! It's been helpful to me to write a blog about this project. It kept me on track and encouraged me to see it through! I hope the 5th grade students will be pleased with how it goes!
